Active malaria infection with P. falciparum is a condition requiring hospitalization, whereas infections with P. vivax, P. ovale or P. malariae can often be treated on an outpatient basis. When properly treated, malaria patients can expect a complete recovery.

Antimalarial drugs

There are several drugs used to treat malaria. The most popular one is Chloroquine. However, due to a growing resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine, the drug becomes ineffective against the most dangerous Plasmodium strain in many regions of the world.

Anti-malarial drugs include:

  • Artemether-lumefantrine
  • Artesunate-amodiaquine
  • Artesunate-mefloquine
  • Artesunate-Sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine
  • Atovaquone-proguanil
  • Quinine
  • Chloroquine
  • Cotrifazid
  • Doxycycline
  • Hydroxychloroquine
  • Mefloquine
  • Primaquine
  • Proguanil
  • Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine
